The Sedona Public Library’s 50th Anniversary Celebration
Weekly Author Series: Wayne Ranney
As part of the 2008 50th Anniversary Sedona Public Library Celebration weekly Author Series, Wayne Ranney will be discussing the question “How Old Is The Grand Canyon?” and sharing excerpts from his latest book, Carving Grand Canyon, on Friday, July 18, 2008 at 6 pm at the library. The program, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Si Birch Community Room. Copies of Wayne’s book will be available for purchase and signing following the presentation.
Wayne Ranney loves southwestern landscapes! A two week vacation in 1975 led him to his first southwest residency in the bottom of the Grand Canyon as a backcountry ranger at Phantom Ranch. Living among the rocks for three years inspired him to formally study geology at Northern Arizona University, where he obtained both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees. He worked as a river guide during these years on the Colorado, San Juan, and Verde rivers.
He began working as a shipboard geologic interpreter in 1989 and traveled the world. Completing over 100 expeditions took him many times to the Arctic, the Amazon, Africa, and Antarctica. These far-flung adventures allowed him to see and learn about many different kinds of landscapes but he always returned to the red rock cliffs and canyon country of his adopted home in Flagstaff, Arizona. He currently works as a geologic interpreter and trail guide for organizations such as the Smithsonian, the Museum of Northern Arizona, and the Grand Canyon Field Institute. He is an adjunct faculty member at Coconino Community College in Flagstaff, where he teaches courses in southwestern geology.
Wayne is an award winning author who inspires readers to learn more about their home planet. He has written many books including "Carving Grand Canyon" and "Sedona Through Time". He also is a contributing writer for Sedona Magazine. Wayne loves photography, river running, travel, and hiking with his fiancée, Helen, in the Grand Canyon.

The Sedona Public Library’s 50th Anniversary Celebration
Weekly Author Series: Bill Armstrong
As part of the 2008 50th Anniversary Sedona Public Library Celebration weekly Author Series, Bill Armstrong will be discussing his latest book, It’s Your Life. . . Live It And Love It, on Friday, July 25, 2008 at 6 pm at the library. The program, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Si Birch Community Room. Copies of Bill’s book will be available for purchase and signing following the presentation.
It’s Your Life. . . will help you get more out of your life. It consists of over 30 ‘musings’ about a wide range of topics related to life and living. Your life is special. It is yours and yours alone. No other person can have your experiences. No other person can savor and enjoy your experiences in the same way you can. Read each ‘musing’ and reflect on it’s meaning and relevance to you as you continue on your life’s journey, conscious of how the choices you make impact you, those around you, and the global community.
Bill Armstrong speaks and writes from the conviction that every organization...every individual…has undeveloped potential. He simplifies leadership techniques and applies them to everyday problems, challenges, and opportunities. As a consultant Bill has worked with organizations to increase productivity, reduce operating costs, and improve labor-management relationships.
In his work with individuals, Bill has inspired growth and an increased sense of personal value. His presentation style is both genuine and direct and has been compared to that of Will Rogers and John Wayne.
He is a member of the Western Writers of America, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, the Screen Actors Guild, and The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. He has also appeared in over 50 feature films and 100 television programs, and on stage as a stand-up comedian.

The Sedona Public Library’s 50th Anniversary Celebration
Weekly Author Series: Doris Casey, Kerrie Droban, Ben Small, Betty Webb and moderator Kris Neri
“Arizona Crime Wave”
Sedona will host its own “literary crime wave” when members of the Mystery Writers of America converge here to help the Sedona Public Library celebrate its 50th anniversary on Friday, August 1 at 6:00 pm.
Whether you’re a mystery fan, a writer who dreams of seeing your own name on a cover, or a published author yourself – this is your chance to get the answers to all your crime genre-related questions from those “whodunit.”
The Arizona Crime Wave will begin with an informal reception at The Well Red Coyote bookstore from 3 pm – a great opportunity to mingle, over wine and goodies, with MWA members and some of Arizona’s most illustrious mystery writers.
At 6 pm, we’ll converge on the library for a lively panel discussion that will cover all aspects of the mystery genre. How do mystery writers decide which characters to bump off in their books? What tricks do they use to keep us turning the pages until well into the night? And anything else the audience wants to know!
Featured on this all-star line-up will be:
Donis Casey is the author of the award-winning Alafair Tucker mystery series. Set in historical Oklahoma and proudly proclaiming the independent spirit she learned growing up there, her titles include The Drop Edge of Yonder, Hornswoggled and The Old Buzzard had it Coming.
Criminal defense attorney, Kerrie Droban, is the author of In the Company of Darkness and The Watchman’s Circle, which won the Daphne Du Maurier Award, and the true crime, Running with the Devil: The True Story of ATF’s Infiltration of Arizona Hell’s Angels.
Ben Small, another trial lawyer, is the author of Alibi On Ice and The Olive Horseshoe, which best-selling author Vince Flynn describes as “Fast and hard, with terrific characters and gripping suspense.”
Betty Webb, author, journalist and book reviewer, writes the LenaJonesdetectiveseries – Desert Run, Desert Shadows, Desert Wives, Desert Noir and Desert Cut – which has garnered rave reviews from the NY Times, Chicago Tribune and other prestigious national publications.
The panel discussion will be moderated by Kris Neri, award-winning mystery author, writing instructor, co-owner of The Well Red Coyote bookstore, and board member of the SoCal Chapter of MWA.
MWA is the premier organization for mystery and crime writers, professionals allied to the crime writing field, aspiring crime writers, and folks who just love to read crime fiction. Its motto: Crime doesn’t pay…enough.
Both the reception and panel discussion are free and open to the public.
