Be a Friend
Are you one of the thousands of area residents who use and enjoy the Sedona Public Library? Do you know that it is NOT operated by a city or county?
Sedona Public Library is a privately owned and operated non-profit corporation that has been serving the community since 1958. Initially a 100% volunteer effort funded entirely by donations, your Library today still depends on its dedicated volunteers and contributions from the public.
One simple and inexpensive way you can help the Library is to become a member of the Friends of the Library. This week, residents of the Sedona area were mailed an invitation to join or renew their Friends membership. Please return your completed membership form and be a Friend. It’s a valuable investment in your Library’s future.
Over the past fifty years, the Friends group has reached out to local citizens to join as annual members. For less than the cost of a single hardcover book, you can take pride in knowing that your membership donation will help sustain and enhance library services.
The Friends contribute $100,000 annually to the Library’s budget, enabling us to continue to purchase new books, DVDs, audiobooks, magazines, and e-books.
Recently, special contributions from the Friends helped finance the self-checkout stations, the reorganization of the collection, and teen and children’s programs. The group provided matching grants for the purchase of computers and a new book drop for Sedona Public Library in the Village, located in the Tequa Marketplace.
Just last week, a funding request for an annual subscription to Film Movement was approved by the Friends group. Film Movement is a distributor of critically acclaimed, independent, predominantly foreign films. Its mission is to give audiences access to films that would not otherwise be distributed by American studios. Movies released by Film Movement are shown at film festivals around the world, including the Sedona Film Festival.
Film Movement offers a film-of-the-month subscription plan for libraries. Every month, subscribers receive a DVD of a new-release, independently produced film. The subscription includes public performance rights for each film, in addition to the right to circulate the DVDs.
This new service will allow the Library to increase the number and variety of films we can show to the public at the free Monday night film series.
In addition to your membership, you can support the Friends by shopping at their ongoing used book sales in the Library and online. The Friends sell books online through Amazon.com. Take a peek at their inventory by going to http://www.amazon.com/shops/sedonafossilz.
Another way to support the Friends is to purchase a Bashas’ Community Card at the Library’s reference desk for $10 (they are not available for purchase at the grocery store). By purchasing a card, you can donate six percent of your regular grocery expenses to the Friends group, at no additional cost to you.
Library News appears each Friday in the Red Rock News and is also presented on Sedona Biz.
