Thank you for your interest in the Sedona Public Library’s Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees needs individual volunteers who have a commitment to Sedona Public Library, its values, its importance to the community, and who have an interest in and/or experience with one or more of the following areas:
- Advocacy
- Fundraising and donor development
- Financial management
- Architectural/building systems and space planning
- Organizational/corporate structure and non-profit operations, including experience working with a governing board
- Library experience and familiarity with issues facing libraries today
- Marketing, public relations, and social networking
- Long-range strategic planning
- Human Resources
- Contracts and legal negotiations for an AZ 501(c)3
The following information will provide you with a brief overview of an SPL Trustee’s election, commitments, and responsibilities.
- How are Trustees elected? Information submitted by applicants is first evaluated by the Nominating Committee. Committee members will interview selected applicants. The Nominating Committee will then choose applicants to submit to the Board of Trustees for review and approval. Finally, new Trustees will be installed at the annual June meeting of the Board of Trustees.
- How much time should I allow for this commitment? The Board of Trustees holds monthly meetings at 9:00 AM on the third Tuesday of the month. These meetings generally average 90 minutes to two hours in length. Each Trustee is expected to become active in at least two or three Library committees or work group participation. You can expect this additional time commitment to average around ten or twelve hours per month.
- How much about libraries will I be expected to know? No specific library experience is required, but there is an assumption that you would not be applying for this position unless you are a regular library user, have been a library volunteer, or have deep interest in the long-range vision for the library and the Sedona community.
- How long is the Trustee commitment? Trustee terms are for three years. At the end of your term and self-evaluation, it is possible to serve additional terms if you desire and reapply.
- How important is it that I attend other library activities? As a Trustee, you become a library representative. It is quite important that you attend various library activities during the year. For example, we honor our volunteers with a yearly luncheon and we expect our Trustees to attend. There may be a variety of other programs scheduled at the Library and events or meetings in the community that we expect our Trustees to attend. We also expect Trustees to take an interest in library staff, programs, and public relations.
- How are Trustees expected to support the library financially and support donor development? Trustees are encouraged to be advocates for the library and to work with Development staff on building donor relations. Trustees can meet their yearly individual financial obligation to the library by donating a minimum of $1,000 annually.
As with most other community, non-profit organizations, we are respectful of the various individual needs of our Trustees. Should you require time away from an assignment, or if you cannot attend some meetings and/or other activities, we will do our best to accommodate your needs but we expect advance notice of your absence whenever possible.
If you have additional questions, feel free to contact the Board of Trustees Nominating Committee Chair, Dan Gallagher at 443-536-1430 or email: gallagherdp@gmail.com, or Judy Poe, Library Director at 928-282-7714 x 8116 or email: jpoe@sedonalibrary.org. Thank you for your interest. We look forward to talking with you soon.
