Local Organizations Offer Programs at the Library

1/20/2017

Northern Arizona is blessed with talented residents with diverse and impressive professional backgrounds and experiences who are eager to share their stories.  Many of the local organizations that meet at Sedona Public Library open their meetings to the public to share their speakers with all.

Verde Valley Chapter of the Arizona Archaeological Society meets on the fourth Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Si Birch Community Room.  The speaker for the January 26 meeting is Spence Gustav and the topic is Archaeology of Libya.

Libya has a long and complex pre-history but has not received the same level of interest or study as its North African coastal neighbors Tunisia or Egypt. Tourism seclusion in modern times and a desert climate resulted in the superlative preservation of archaeological sites attributed to the Berbers, Greeks, Romans and Ottomans.

However the current civil war has put the preservation of these sites at extreme risk. Much has been reported about protection and destruction of sites in Syria, Iraq and other countries during the recent time period. Little is known of the sites in Libya.

Photographs of a range of sites in a wide variety of areas of Libya will be presented to show the status of these sites just prior to the Arab Spring.  Many of the sites are well known to the outside world due to relatively easy access during recent periods of political stability. Other sites will be shown that were not frequently visited by westerners in the past and are now in essentially inaccessible locations.

Gustav is a retired petroleum geologist with a MS degree in Geology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a degree in Archaeology/Anthropology from Hunter College, CUNY.  For 35+ years he lived and worked overseas; this provided great access to a range of archaeological sites.

He retired to Sedona from Tripoli, Libya in 2007. He is an active member of the Sedona Friends of the Forest where he is a docent and docent trainer at Palatki and Honanki, and is an active member of the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Verde Search and Rescue Posse.

We look forward to hosting meetings and programs for a variety of organizations in 2017.  Please join us!  Check the events calendar at www.sedonalibrary.org for programs offered by the Library and other groups.

Quilt Show Displays Local Talent

1/13/2017

It must be January in Sedona.  Just in time to ward off the post-holiday blues and to brighten up some otherwise dreary and wet days, the quilts are up and visitors and residents are flocking in to see them.

This year, Sedona Public Library’s Annual Quilt Show features 58 quilts, showcasing the creativity of our local quilters against the architectural beauty of the Library.  The show runs through Saturday, February 25.

Quilter’s Store Sedona is sponsoring this event, and we’re grateful to store owner Cynthia Cunningham for continuing this tradition.  As always, the diverse display of traditional and contemporary quilts is stunning.

As you wander through the aisles looking at quilts and reading the handout, the love that is poured into these quilts will be evident.  Look for the quilts mentioned below, created by volunteers of Sedona Public Library.

“Sherbet” (#44) is by volunteer Sandy Kreml, who works at the Circulation Desk.  Sandy set out to make a quilt for her daughter-in-law, Kates, using a pattern from the book, Turning Twenty by Tricia Cribbs.  She collected various fat quarters that reminded her of orange sherbet. The machine quilting was done by Andrea Marquez.

“Happy Hauntings” (#54) is also by Sandy.  She said 2016 was her year to finish Halloween patterns and this witch was just too fun to make and display.  Sandy did all the machine appliqué and Mary Bailey did the quilting.

“Michigan” (#18) is by Krista Otto, who worked for many years at the Circulation Desk.  Krista made this quilt for her son and his wife for their wedding.  They picked the pattern (they’re both Michiganians) off the internet and Krista simplified it.  She said she would have gone bonkers otherwise, as too many angles had to meet.  The technique used is mostly paper piecing and the quilting was done by Quilter’s Quarters in Cottonwood.

Two quilts that are on display will be raffled off during the outdoor Quiltfest Show at the Quilter’s Store on May 6, 2017:

“Make Me Beautiful Raffle Quilt II” is by patrons of the Quilter’s Store.  The blocks in this quilt were created by customers from across the country who visited the store during 2016.  The challenge was to select one of three specified fabrics and make a “beautiful” quilt block using it. The response was so great that enough blocks were submitted to create two quilts.  The blocks in this quilt were arranged and sewn together by Ann Magetteri and the quilting was done by Dottie Hamm in Cottonwood.  Raffle tickets are on sale at the Quilter’s Store for $1.00 each or (6) for $5.00. All proceeds from this project benefit the Verde Valley Sanctuary Women’s Shelter.

“Tracks in the Desert” was created by several members of the Red Rock Quilters Guild and all the applique is hand done. Diana Up did the quilting.  Raffle tickets are available at the Quilter’s Store for $1.00 each, (7) for $5.00, or (15) for $10.00. All proceeds will benefit community projects by various local organizations.

We hope that you enjoy another delightful show of quilts and stories.  We are fortunate to have a talented community of quilters in our area, who generously share their treasures with us.

Visit the Library in the New Year

1/6/2017

Now that the holidays are over, January seems rather anti-climactic.  If you are looking for things to do that won’t put a strain on your budget, look no further than your library.  Most library services and programs are free.
Here are 17 things that you can do at your library in January to welcome 2017:

  1. Check out a Culture Pass. This pass gives a library customer FREE admission for two people at 19 participating arts and cultural institutions in Northern Arizona and the Phoenix area.
  2. Watch a movie at the Library.  The Flicker Shack film series offers a free movie most Monday evenings.  The show begins at 6:00 p.m. in the community room. The movie is free and open to the public.  Donations are always welcome.
  3. Relax and decrease stress by participating in the adult coloring club.
  4. Learn something new about the history of Arizona when you attend an Arizona Humanities presentation. These programs are held once a month at the Church of the Nazarene in the Village of Oak Creek.
  5. Enjoy a cup of coffee and chat with a veteran at Coffee with a Vet, on the second Friday of every month from 10 a.m. until noon.
  6. View the quilt display and take time to admire the talent of local quilters.
  7. Access the Mango Languages database to learn a new language.
  8. Schedule one-on-one time with a Tech Tutor at the main library.  Call 928.282.7714, option 3, to make an appointment.
  9. Join the Investment Club which meets on the first and third Friday of every month at 11 a.m.
  10.  Binge watch your favorite TV series. Check out the DVDs.
  11. Participate in the community book discussion in the Village or join the Mystery Book Club at SPL.
  12.  Get a kid fix.  Help out in the children’s room or attend story time.
  13.  Read a book!
  14.  Browse current magazines or back issues of your favorite magazine.  You can even learn how to download free digital magazines from Zinio.
  15.  Use the Library Document Station to scan and save documents or pictures to your email or USB drive.
  16.  Navigate the new library website at www.sedonalibrary.org. The new and improved library website is designed to provide patrons with a fresh, modern look with easier access to information and a more mobile-friendly experience.
  17.  View the events calendar at www.sedonalibrary.org to discover free programs and events provided by your library.

No matter your age, your library has something for everyone.  With your library card, you have access to over one million items in the Yavapai Library Network.  The library also has computers available for public use and access to free Wi-Fi.  There are free programs for all ages. Take full advantage of your library in 2017!

Please call Sedona Public Library at 928-282-7714 or Sedona Public Library in the Village at 928-284-1603 for more information about services, programs, and exhibits offered at your library.
