Do you remember participating in a summer reading program as a child? Perhaps you’ve even signed your children up for the annual reading club. For the first time ever, Sedona Public Library is incorporating adults into the summer reading program! The program for lifelong readers runs from May 31 through July 31, and you can register now.
When you sign up, you’ll receive one free book. Yes, all library books are free for the public, but this one you get to keep! Just stop by the reference desk to pick up your book. Then you can log each minute that you read during the program online and share book reviews, too. Your reading minutes can include time spent listening to audiobooks, reading the newspaper, and even reading bedtime stories to your children. You don’t even have to finish a book in order to log the minutes! To us, 10 minutes of reading is 10 minutes of reading. Each minute of reading that you log equals one point. Once you reach 1,600 points, you’ll be automatically entered into a drawing for a Fitbit Alta. If you stay on track and read 30 minutes each day in June and July, you’ll reach the goal no problem! It’s also a great time to start volunteering at SPL, since every hour of volunteering equals one point towards the drawing, too. For every three book reviews that you submit online, you’ll also receive a small prize from one of our sponsors. Make sure to come by the reference desk to pick up your book review prizes. All prizes for the summer reading program must be picked up by August 6. Register, log your points, and submit reviews here: https://sedonaspirit.azsummerreading.org. Click on the Lifelong Readers tab for information about the adult portion of this year’s summer reading program. If you’re a parent wanting to sign up the whole family, make sure to register yourself first in order to create a family account. If you have any questions, call us at 928-282-7714. Exercise your mind this summer by taking advantage of this great new program. Happy reading! Sedona Public Library Column for May 20, 2016 Written by Elizabeth Cate, Collection Development Librarian Registration is now open for the seventh annual Sedona Youth Theatre workshop, which begins July 12 at Sedona Public Library. This popular library program for ages 10 through 17 offers a unique group learning experience. Fifteen workshop hours include theatre games, learning and honing improvisational skills, practicing correct vocal and breathing techniques, understanding disciplines of stage performance, and building team skills and confidence. At the end of the workshop, participants will stage a performance at the Library.
Sedona Youth Theatre is the creation of Dev Ross and Shondra Jepperson, two extremely talented and hardworking professionals. Award-winning screenwriter and children’s book author Dev Ross has been writing for adults and children for over 30 years. We have many of her books in our library! Her awards include an Action in Children’s Television Award, a Dramalogue Award, an Emmy Award, and a Humanitas Award. Credits include writing films and television programs for Disney, Fox Kids, Universal Cartoon Studios, The Cartoon Network, Discovery Channel, Nickelodeon, PBS, and more. Dev was also the Artistic Director of the Emmy Award–winning Twelfth Night Repertory Company, an educational theatre and television troop. Shondra Jepperson attended Julliard’s acting school in New York. She is a full-time singer-songwriter, actress, and musician, not to mention that she’s also a professional audio production specialist who composes and arranges music for shows, commercials, and other projects. With over 30 years of professional experience, she is a skilled and busy entertainer. You’ll also find Shondra on Sedona’s Red Rock Television 16 as their co-anchor and virtual tour guide. About Sedona Youth Theatre, Shondra commented, “We have so many talented kids here in Sedona and the Verde Valley. It’s very rewarding to work with these kids and see what their talents bring to the performance at the end of the workshop.” Dev Ross added, “We focus the kids on working together, creatively as a team, and every year the kids do a great job in accomplishing that and even more. We’re always proud of them.” Thanks to the Friends of the Library’s sponsorship of Sedona Youth Theatre, participants can choose to volunteer in the Children’s Room in exchange for a reduction in the $85 cost of the workshop. For every three hours worked, the price is reduced $25—work nine hours, and the cost of the 15-hour workshop is down to $10! Register soon, as volunteer hours need to be scheduled and completed by June 30. Call 928-282-7714 ext. 119 for more information. Sedona Public Library Column for May 13, 2016 Written by Karen Mack, Youth Services Librarian May is the perfect time to honor the men and women who serve in the United States military. Armed Forces Day, a day for citizens to come together and thank members of the military for their service to our country, is on May 21 this year. Those who are honored on this day include people who serve in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard.
On Friday, May 13, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Library’s Si Birch Community Room, you can meet and thank local veterans by attending Coffee with a Vet, a monthly event organized by the Veterans History Project. Everyone is welcome to participate and enjoy free coffee, pastries, and conversation with veterans. As Memorial Day approaches, we’d like to remind you that you can experience a piece of history by watching American veterans tell their unique personal stories. The Veterans History Project of Sedona has made available a collection of 65 interviews on DVD that you can view on library computers. Interviews are 30 to 90 minutes long and are indexed by name, conflict, and branch of service. Each features a local veteran or a veteran with a local connection. The number of interviews on DVD will increase as more veterans participate. To watch an interview, stop by the reference desk. Specially trained volunteers conduct and record the interviews privately in the Library’s Quiet Study Room. To date, our local Veterans History Project volunteers have interviewed more than 260 participants. Completed interviews are transferred to DVDs, one of which is given to the participating veteran or civilian, one is sent to the Library of Congress, and one is retained in the archives of the Sedona Public Library. Some of the interviews conducted by our volunteers can be seen and heard on the Library of Congress website at www.loc.gov/vets. According to local project coordinator Jolene Pierson, “This project succeeds because there are dedicated active volunteers including Dan Aragaki, Clint Lisk, Ed Uzumeckis, and Dave Norton. These volunteers host coffees, contact veterans, man tables at public events, solicit donations, operate the camera for interviews, and make the DVDs. I certainly could not do this without all of them, and we always welcome new volunteers.” Pierson added: “We have heard some remarkable stories of personal sacrifice and endurance, humor and sadness, loneliness and adventure, travel and education, friendships made, and careers influenced and enhanced. Some served stateside. Some served overseas. Some served distinguished careers without ever experiencing combat. Some survived the most horrific battles of these wars and have shared stories of how they were able to cope with their experiences. “Some quietly did their duty without much official recognition or appreciation, still knowing that their job was an essential part of the war effort. For every soldier on the front lines, there were nine others doing jobs that assured that the one could do his job; including civilians who actively supported war efforts as defense industry workers, flight instructors, and medical volunteers, and the stories of those who served behind the scenes are also an important part of the record.” If you are a veteran or a civilian who was involved in the war effort, if you know a veteran who should participate in the Veterans History Project, or if you are interested in joining our volunteer group, please contact Jolene Pierson at 282-7999 orjpierson@commspeed.net to learn more about our local project. To learn more about the national Veterans History Project, visit the website of the Library of Congress at www.loc.gov/vets. The Library is a proud partner in the Veterans History Project. Funding for this project is provided locally through tax-deductible donations by individuals, businesses, and local organizations. Recently, Sedona Detachment 1237 of the Marine Corps League has been a major donor. Donations may be sent to the Sedona Public Library, 3250 White Bear Road, Sedona, AZ 86336, specifying that the donation is restricted to the Veterans History Project.
