Reasons to Read This Summer

5/19/2016

As we prepare to launch the 2016 summer reading program, we encourage you to consider the many ways that taking part in the program can benefit you and your family, whether you are enrolling your kids or grandkids or are intrigued by our new reading program for adults.

Kate DiCamillo, author of many award-winning children’s books (such as Because of Winn-Dixie and The Tale of Despereaux ) and spokesperson for this year’s national summer reading program, has put together a list of the top 10 reasons to participate in your local library’s summer reading program.  Check out the full list at http://www.cslpreads.org/.  Here’s our shortened and edited version of her list.

  • You Could Make Some Real Friends. As Kate says, “Stories connect us all.” Share your summer reading discoveries with neighbors, acquaintances, or even the person browsing next to you in the Library. Readers love recommendations!

  • If You Want to Go Everywhere, Open a Library Book. Even if you aren’t taking a trip this summer, you can experience anything by opening a library book. From having epic adventures, to facing down danger, to fighting bravely against injustice, Kate explains, reading can transport you to another time and place.

  • A Library Is a Good Place to Hide. One reason Kate loves libraries is they have “these amazing nooks to curl up in with a book and just get lost.” Pay us a visit this summer to check out books and you might find your own nook where you can linger and escape the heat.

  • Librarians Like the Company of Readers. To Kate, librarians are “gatekeepers to stories. They always seem to know how to pick just the right book for just the right person.” Don’t worry if you’re at a loss for what to read this summer—our staff can help you select books for your summer reading list.

  • You Could Win a Prize.  In her top 10 list, Kate explains, “Reading is its own gift. You learn new words and experience new things through different characters.” At Sedona Library we are offering reading prizes for kids, teens, and adults.
Sign up for summer reading and discover more great reasons for participating in this free program that is open to all ages. The program begins May 31 and ends July 23.  You can register either in person or online starting May 23.

Sedona Public Library is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, partially supported by the City of Sedona and Yavapai and Coconino Counties. We also require donations and grants to fund our operations.
